Student Projects TAMS Laboratory

SAINTS is a division of NRF iThemba LABS focusing on the provision of education, training and professional development for students and staff linked in the first instance to iThemba LABS.

Principal Investigators

The SAINTS Student Projects at TAMS provide MSc and PhD students with the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research using the TAMS 6 MV Tandem accelerator at iThemba LABS. These projects span various fields, including beam energy calibration, materials science, and ion beam applications. Students will explore innovative topics such as radiation sensing, ion beam irradiation, and the study of landscapes through cosmogenic radionuclide dating. The projects are designed to advance both fundamental scientific understanding and practical applications in areas like nuclear physics, material characterization, and environmental science.

Metal-doped crystalline silicon thin films for radiation sensing applications

The aim of the research is to contribute to the development of a high-efficient and radiation-hard detectors through fabrication and characterization of silicon devices. In this work the effects of metal doping on the properties of crystalline silicon films will be investigated. Strategies to improve the quality of detector performance is based on the knowledge of morphological properties of the thin film material and electrical properties of the devices fabricated from the material.

Accelerator beam energy calibration on the TAMS 6 MV Tandem accelerator using oxygen resonant nuclear reaction 12O (α,α) 12O and carbon resonant nuclear reaction 12C(α,α) 12

The aim is to perform beam energy calibration using the oxygen resonant nuclear reaction 16O(α,α)16O at 3038 keV, as well as the carbon resonant nuclear reaction 12C(α,α)12C at 4260 keV in the nuclear microprobe beam-line.

Temporal Evolution of Landscapes and Landforms of South Africa using Cosmogenic Radionuclides with the AMS

The projects proposed herein are, in part, a response to a call by two of the prominent geologists working in and based in South Africa at present Professors Grab and Knight. In a chapter of their edited volume of “Landscapes and landforms of South Africa”, Stefan Grab and Jasper Knight specifically invite increased activity in the radiometric experimental measurements. This is easy to understand because of the millennial time scale that such techniques offer.
