Overview
The Technology and Innovation Platform (TIP), is one of the 4 Pillars in the long range plan (LRP) of iThemba LABS.
iThemba LABS needs to develop and establish extensive expertise within the field of radiation detectors for accelerator-based sciences; which expertise occasionally needs to be exported outside the nuclear and particle physics community. To this end a number of applications are envisaged, spanning from the development of radiation detectors to special materials for development of industrial standard electronics.
The Technological and Innovation Platform (TIP) is designed to establish in-house infrastructure to explore such applications in close partnership with industry for technology transfer purposes. This initiative is expected to benefit the economic sector while enhancing iThemba LABS research and developmental capacity.
Several high-level project areas have been identified to achieve these objectives, amongst which are:
Participation in the next generation silicon detector development, a joint international (multinational) effort aiming at developing flexible silicon detector with onboard electronics. iThemba LABS is relatively new in this technology but desires to gain experience by actively participating in the various phases of the development.
Gas Electron Multiplier: This technology is relatively new to iThemba LABS. The design of a new detector for K600 experiments is ongoing using this technology. Mastering GEM detectors will open new windows of opportunity for both research and medical applications. Ÿ Big-Data Processing through SA-CERN collaboration. Preponderance of strong expertise in Big Data processing has prompted the ATLAS-SA-CERN group to envisage sharing this expertise with industrial partners in several applications using TIP as a developmental platform.

Development of electronics compatible with the Ethercat industrial standards, a project that will give us an edge to develop specialised electronic modules currently not available on the market. This project extends possibilities of using off-the shelf modules together with self-customized electronics.
