Nuclear Physics related research plans at iThemba LABS (Gauteng)

In keeping with the directives of the NRF in order to obtain funding, an essential ingredient of the work of this group is the supervision and co-supervision of postgraduate students and their involvement in research programmes in the area of nuclear physics.

The following areas have been identified for research in experimental nuclear physics, which will occupy about 20% of the time on the 6MV Tandem Accellerator.

  • Exploration and elucidation of heavy-ion interactions and reaction mechanisms at low and medium energies using Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) methods.
  • Proton and electron induced medium-energy reactions allowing comparative studies to be made using hadronic and leptonic probes.

Under the ongoing development programme, the involvement of researchers in related fields is sought to extend the utilisation and function of the state-of-the-art 6MV tandem van der Graaf accelerator.

A range of light to heavy ion reactions are accessible at the beam energies available from the 6MV Tandem van der Graaf Accelerator at iThemba LABS (Gauteng).
