In keeping with the directives of the NRF in order to obtain funding, an essential ingredient of the work of this group will be the supervision and co-supervision of postgraduate students and their involvement in research programmes in the area of subatomic physics.
The following areas have been identified for research in experimental subatomic physics, which is allocated about 20% of the time on the 6MV Tandem Accelerator.
- Exploration and elucidation of heavy-ion interactions and reaction mechanisms at low and medium energies using Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) methods.
- Proton and electron induced medium-energy reactions allowing comparative studies to be made using hadronic and leptonic probes.
Under the ongoing development programme, the involvement of researchers in related fields is sought to extend the utilisation and function of the state-of-the-art 6MV Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator.
A range of light to heavy ion reactions are accessible at the beam energies available from the 6MV Tandem van de Graaff Accelerator at TAMS.
