From the Director’s Office

I welcome you to iThemba LABS (iTL), the largest facility of its kind on the African continent and indeed the Southern Hemisphere.

As stated in our vision; we have set ourselves goals of being the leading African organisation for research, training and expertise in accelerator based sciences and technologies.

Our areas of experitise lie in fields of applied and pure sub-atomic sciences and associated technologies. These can be categorised into three pillars as follows: Radiation therapy using 66 MeV neutrons and 200 MeV protons; radionuclide production and research.

The research activities undertaken at iTL are in the spheres of Nuclear and Applied Physics, Materials Research, and Radiation Biophysics.

There is also a strong research component linked to the particle therapy and radionuclide production progammes.

There is a shortage of the skills and human resources required to meet our challenges within the organization, but also within our country as a whole. The training programmes at iThemba LABS are essential for the growth and diversification of the South African science and technology (S&T) workforce in order to aqcuire skills to build a successful high-tech economy.

To this end, we have taken great strides in ensuring continued collaborative interactions with local and international universities, science agencies and several research laboratories accross the globe.
