Research facilities at iThemba LABS are used by more than 200 scientists and students from many disciplines and from institutions within this country, from Africa and overseas.

Postgraduate students from the Universities of Cape Town, Durban-Westville, MEDUNSA, Natal, North-West, The North, Free State, Pretoria, Rhodes, Stellenbosch, Vista, Western Cape, Witwatersrand and Zululand participate in research projects at iThemba LABS.  These projects range from investigating the behaviour of, and interactions between atomic nuclei, through solid-state physics, geology and environmental monitoring, to studies of cancer-cell growth and death.  Sophisticated methods are used, and the “high-tech” equipment which is necessary has been centralised nationally at iThemba LABS
