The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences is a group of multi-disciplinary research laboratories administered by the National Research Foundation. Based at two sites in the Western Cape and Gauteng, these provide facilities for:

  • Basic and applied research using particle beams
  • Particle radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer
  • The supply of accelerator-produced radioactive isotopes for nuclear medicine and research

World Radiography Day (8th November) marks the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays in 1895. The discovery of the X-ray plays an important role in radiographic imaging and therapy, as it influences the diagnosis and treatment of patients and improves the quality of patient care by ensuring that radiation is kept to a minimum.
