Gauteng Labs – Ongoing Refurbishment

The 6 MV EN Tandem Accelerator at iThemba LABS (Gauteng) has undergone a major refurbishment over the past two (2) years.  This is in view of implementing a fully operational Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) facility over the next 3 years for measurement of cosmogenic isotopic ratios at extraordinarily ultra low levels. This is also a multidisciplinary research facility with applications in the biosciences, geosciences, environmental and materials sciences. The AMS facility is envisaged to become a premier science facility with no peer in the African continent and will provide the basis to perform research in a large range of scientific disciplines such as environmental studies, earth sciences, marine geology, archaeology, climatic and  paleoclimatic studies and biomedical sciences.
