Science&Technology Awareness – Public Tours

iThemba also provides tours for the public. Anybody 18 years old and above may join one of these tours – however prior booking is essential.

If you have a large group of people who would like to visit you are welcome to arrange an exclusive visit.

The tour consists of visits to the various departments – control room, physics research, radionuclide production and materials research. You are welcome to bombard the presenters with as many questions as you wish.

Whilst we do encourage visits as much as possible, it is preferred that groups of no larger than 35 people visit at one time. The tour takes approximately 2 hours, so a good time to start is between 9 – 10 a.m. or at 2 p.m. to allow adequate time.

Learners under the age of 18 are not allowed into any radiation areas – ionizing radiation is roughly 400% more harmful and risky to a 15-year-old person than to a person aged 50, because the cells in the body of a young person divide faster, are less differentiated and are metabolically more active than in a mature person).

All in all the iThemba LABS is well worth a visit.
