Masters Programme – MARST


Masters Degree in Applied Radiation Sciences and Technology (MARST)

Between 2000 and 2004 more than 50 graduate students have been trained in radiation biology at North West University, Mafikeng, as part of the Masters in Applied Radiation Sciences and Technology (MARST) programme. A foundation course in Applied Radiation Biology is offered covering applications in radiation protection, industrial radiation as well as biomedical research. To date four students from this programme have spent their second year of training at iThemba LABS doing research projects for write up as M.Sc. dissertations.

The following topics have been covered:
1. The effectiveness of cysteamine as a radioprotector against cellular damage by fast
neutrons. B. L. Ntuane – 2000 (Supervisor J Slabbert)

2. Bromo-deoxyuridine as a sensitiser of cellular damage for neutron radiation.
K.K. Nkuna – 2001 (Supervisor J Slabbert)

3. The relative biological effectiveness of a 200 MeV clinical proton beam.
T.T. Sebeela – 2003 (Supervisor J Slabbert)

4. The Radiotoxicity of Auger electrons from 123I-antipyrine.
D. Moruri –2004 (Supervisor J Slabbert)

In addition, three M. Sc and three Ph D degrees have been awarded for research work completed at iThemba LABS.
